Mindfulness

Jane Mitchell of MindBodyFeeling, who has run much appreciated mindfulness sessions for our Group in the past, is offering a series of mindfulness sessions which will include various meditations and teaching. The sessions will be gently paced with time for processing and reflecting.

Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention, without judgment, to the present moment. It has been shown to help people with a range of health issues including chronic pain, anxiety, and depression by reducing stress, helping people to understand their capabilities and change the way they relate to their symptoms.

Coming to terms with the physical restrictions and emotional stress caused by a health condition can be very difficult. In Mindfulness the more we practice the more we nurture qualities such as patience, acceptance, trust, and letting go. When we focus on the past or the future it can add to our suffering for example we may get caught up in thoughts about what we can no longer do or worry about how will cope in the future.

When we are in pain or experience something unpleasant, it is natural to want to change it, block it out or get rid of it. Unfortunately, this can also result in our bodies becoming stressed as it is not always possible to change things. Mindfulness helps us to really pay attention and notice the pleasure as well as the pain or discomfort and then we can be with our present experience as it is and with full sensory awareness.

Mindfulness
Qi Gong.jpg
Qigong

This course is an introduction to Qigong and an appraising of exercises learnt by those who have attended before. There will be some new exercises.

This form of movement brings exercises that are gentle and invigorating, that will help the body and mind relax, the muscles let go and build strength while opening the lungs and improve health.

During the course you will get an outline of what Qigong is, what it means and some of its vast history. For now, Qi is the vital energy of everything around us it is in the air, in our food etc. and gong means to work, repeated time and labour. So by doing the work we gather the Qi, the energy we need to help balance the body and as we practice more we build a stronger foundation of health.

To take part in the course you will need to wear loose clothing that allows you to move, the course allows you to sit in a chair, stand and rest. Should you wish to stand for a little while make sure you have socks with some grip or shoes that are comfortable with a flat sole if possible. You can do some of these moves sitting or standing and so let Orla, your instructor, know if that is a need you require. The movements are gentle and you practice the movement at your pace and your body capabilities. Encouraging kind mobility is important when doing any form of exercise and for helping the body to find more balance in health. So if you are getting physiotherapy or consulting a doctor then please check with your therapist/doctor before starting the course.

Orla is a Qigong Instructor and a Dance Movement Psychotherapist. She has done Qigong practice for over 20 years and is very passionate about the skill and benefits it brings to the body and mind.
