The Support Group

Once the DWP have used the points system to assess whether you are entitled to ESA, they apply another test to see if you have limited capability for work related activity. If any of the following descriptors apply to you, you will be considered to have limited capability for work related activity and will be put in the support group.

  1. Cannot, without the aid of another person, mobilise more than 50 metres 

  2. Cannot, without the aid of another person, stand up from a chair and move to a chair next to it 

  3. Cannot raise either arm, for example to put something in the top pocket of a coat 

  4. Cannot pick up and move a 0.5 litre carton full of liquid, for example a pint of milk

  5. Cannot press a button with either hand, or cannot turn a page of a book with either hand

  6. Cannot, by speaking, writing or typing, convey a simple message, for example, 'Stop! There's a car coming'

  7. Cannot understand information, such as a fire escape sign

  8. At least once per week experiences loss of control and extensive evacuation of either bladder or bowel, or substantial leaking of a collecting device, which means you have to clean and change clothing.

  9. Cannot learn how to complete a simple task, such as making a phone call

  10. Reduced awareness of everyday hazards leads to a significant risk of injury to self or others, or damage to property or possessions meaning that the claimant requires supervision for the majority of the time to maintain safety

  11. Cannot reliably start or complete two personal actions one after the other, because of impaired mental function

  12. Cannot cope with any change which means that you cannot manage day-to-day life

  13. No social engagement is possible because of difficulty relating to others or significant distress

  14. On a daily basis has uncontrollable episodes of aggressive or disinhibited behaviour

  15. Cannot convey food or drink to our mouth without physical assistance or prompting

  16. Cannot chew or swallow food or drink without prompting
