Job title: Welfare benefits and social care adviser

Hours: 18 hours/week (flexible hours policy)

Salary: £22,947 pro rata

Start date: as soon as possible


At Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Group we are proud to be able to offer tailored welfare benefits and social care advice to members that truly understands the specific nature and difficulties of living with one or both of these illnesses. We now have a vacancy for one person to join our benefits and social care adviser team of two to ensure those affected by myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia or long covid can fully access the support they are entitled to, through tailored advice and advocacy.


The post holder will deliver high quality benefits and social care advice and advocacy for our members at present via telephone and online sessions. This includes providing remote and in-person support and advocacy at medical assessments and tribunals. They will also be expected to promote access to benefits and social care support through delivering talks, training sessions, drop-ins, using social media, writing promotional materials for our magazine and through our website. This will also include liaising with relevant organisations.


Sheffield ME & Fibromyalgia Group are a small charity whose aims are to promote awareness of these illnesses, their impact on those affected and their carers, and to provide help and assistance through mutual support, wellbeing activities and information exchange. The charity’s activities cover South Yorkshire and north Derbyshire.


Applications are sought from candidates with experience of providing one-to-one casework support as well as good knowledge and understanding of general and disability benefits, and social care support.


Excellent communication, organisational and IT skills are required. The successful candidate will understand some of the issues faced by those with severe chronic illness and will support those marginalised by the illness to have a voice and contribute to developing the service. Access to a car is desirable.
